Dear Reader,

Last week I was standing in the room before one of my training sessions started.

Everything was set up. Chairs lined up, slides ready, but not a single person had walked in yet. In a little while a few hundred people would be filling the space, but for that moment it was completely quiet.

I paused, took a couple of photos, and just looked around.

There’s something about that moment before people arrive.

You know it could go in a number of different directions. You also know people are going to walk in carrying their own expectations, their own stress, maybe even hoping they’ll hear something that genuinely helps.

So I took a breath and reminded myself why I was there.

Just be present with them.

Because in the end, it’s not really about what we say.

It’s about what people actually remember when we show up for them.

The Story

Last week I led a few training sessions where there were between 200 and 300 people in the room.

That’s a lot of people, and everyone walks in carrying something different.

Their workload. Their stress. Maybe even a quiet hope that something they hear might actually help once they go back to their jobs and their lives.

So I kept reminding myself of something simple.

Just be present.

Listen to what people were actually asking instead of trying to sound impressive.

When people raised their hands to ask questions, I tried to slow down and really hear what they were asking. Then I’d respond in a way that answered their question while also opening it up for everyone else in the room.

Because most of the time, when one person asks something, hundreds of others are wondering the same thing.

And something interesting started happening.

People relaxed.

There was more laughter than you might expect in a room that size. A little silliness. Real conversation instead of just slides and talking points.

After the sessions ended, people started coming up to talk. Some wanted to share a story from their work. Some had a follow up question.

A few asked if we could take a picture together.

And every time that happens, I feel a little surprised.

Because I’m not trying to give people something impressive.

I’m just trying to meet them in a way that feels real and hopefully helpful for the work and the lives they’re going back to.

The Spiritual Lesson

That quote from Maya Angelou has stayed with me for a long time.

I think about it often, especially after moments like the one last week.

Because the truth is, most people won’t remember the exact words from a presentation or a meeting. Even the best ideas fade after a while.

What stays with them is something quieter than that.

They remember how they felt in the room.

Did they feel talked at, or part of the conversation?

Did they feel like another person in the audience, or like someone actually cared about what they were going through?

When you’re really present with someone, they feel it. Even in a room filled with 300 people.

When we slow down enough to really listen, people feel it. When we’re willing to be human instead of polished, people feel that too.

And most of the time, that’s what stays with people long after the moment has passed.

Not the specific words, but the way they felt while they were there.

Your Call to Action

As you move through your week, you might notice how often people are waiting to be heard.

It might show up in a meeting or just in a quick conversation during the day.

Not because they need the perfect answer or the right words.

Sometimes they’re just hoping someone will slow down long enough to really listen.

You might be surprised how much can shift when someone feels that kind of presence.

Sometimes the most meaningful thing we offer the people around us isn’t advice or expertise.

It’s simply showing up in a way that lets them know they matter.

Before You Go

It’s easy to think the impact we have on people comes from the right words, the right idea, or the right advice.

But more often, it comes from something much simpler.

The way we show up for people.

When someone feels heard, something settles inside them. The pressure softens a little. The moment becomes a little more human.

And sometimes that’s the part they carry with them long after the conversation is over.

So wherever your work and your conversations take you this week, you might remember that the way you show up matters more than you think.
