Dear Reader,
Years ago, I met a young woman who shared with me her dream.
Let's call her Janet.
For years, Janet had wanted to start her own line of work where she could care for special needs children.
When I asked her what might be stopping her from pursuing this dream, she sheepishly replied, “Because I’ve become too comfortable with my life, and it takes too much energy to change.”
Becoming too comfortable...
I’ve heard this very same sentiment come out of the mouths of many people I’ve worked with.
Comfort isn't a bad thing at all, but when you're feeling "too" comfortable, it's a sign that something inside of you has shifted.
What's that sign, you ask?
Well, keep on reading, and let’s get ALIGNED…

The Story and The Spiritual Lesson
When Janet shared with me that being too comfortable was stopping her from pursuing her dream, I realized that I’ve heard this very same sentiment come out of the mouths of many people I’ve worked with.
I call this the trap of becoming too comfortable.
You might be familiar with some of these scenarios of clients I've worked with:
- Jeff took a job in the corporate world because he thought that’s what one does after going to college. He made a decent amount of money and had his health insurance covered. Despite this security, he hated his work. He didn’t explore other career options because he didn’t want to give up the money and benefits in his job.
- After working for years at a non-profit, Maria started her own consulting business working with non-profits. She felt the calling to do “her own thing” so she started her own business. But she never took the time to figure out what her “thing” was, so she continued doing the same kind of work she was familiar with, even though it didn’t excite her anymore. She identified her work as based on her current level of skills, and disregarded her passion.
- On the outside, Lisa seems like she had it all together. She was a successful businesswoman who traveled and spoke to audiences all over the country. On the inside, she felt burnt out, and she had been burning out for the last few years. She achieved a life that many people would love to have, but it was a life she didn’t want anymore.
For Jeff, Maria, Lisa and Janet, they each found themselves in the trap of becoming too comfortable.
Some people call this wearing the golden handcuffs.
They're golden because they look shiny and great. Who wouldn't want gold?
But they're handcuffs because as much as you want the money, the security and the familiar, you don't feel fully satisfied.
Something still feels like it's missing.
When you become too comfortable, life starts to feel stagnant.
You know what happens to water when it becomes stagnant and doesn’t move?
It starts to attract bugs, parasites, and bacteria.
The water becomes a breeding ground for disease and other icky things.
The same thing can happen if your life becomes stagnant.
If you don’t invite a fresh flowing of new energy, you become susceptible to dis-ease and burnout.
Your Call to Action
For your coaching assignment for this week, let’s see if any part of your life might be feeling a little too comfortable:
- Is there anywhere in your life where you’re feeling the urge to change it up?
- Do you feel an itch to try something new?
- Are you finding yourself resistant or not wanting to deal with some area of your life?
If you answered yes to any of these, you may be experiencing some stagnancy in your life.
You might have unwittingly found yourself in the trap of being too comfortable.
If you answered no to all of these, then you might have the right amount of flow and new energy circulating in your life.
The invitation is to check in and ask yourself these questions every so often.
Stagnancy has a way of creeping in without you realizing it.
At the heart of this is this spiritual truth:
We are evolutionary beings living in an ever-evolving Universe.
Growing, evolving and expanding are the central impulse to all of Life itself.
How are you being called to grow today?
